A great servant but a bad master, a sword having the double edge with might and mind of its own mostly escalating beyond what the handler proposes. It is a virtual world where anybody can put on a façade towards an end and convince some people with the mirage of believing others’ life is perfect. Social media is an interactive, interesting, exciting computer oriented new technology that has widely changed our means of creating and sharing of information and ideas.
It is a community where you can grasp the attention of the world or lose it within minutes, gain friends and recognition across the globe, etc. depending on your contents. Social media is an amazing platform to educate oneself in a variety of ways beyond what can be taught in class. Everyone strives to make an impact on others even though, the motive differs ranging from some trying to gain popularity and others scheming to maintain a positive social media reputation. For some, it is the only means of ruminating for the benefit of others and the acceptance of others.
While individuals use social media for various reasons, companies use the platform to find and engage with customers, drive sales through advertising and promotion, gauge consumer trends, offering customer service or support and some use it to evaluate their staffs making it an indispensable tool.
Several millions of people taking advantage of social media are on a contest that focuses on the number of followers, views, location, the gap between posts or votes rather than the quality of messages they are passing across or how genuine it is. People have stopped talking and having decent conversations in real life activities as they have become a shadow of themselves who cannot influence an effective change outside the walls of social media.
It is not in any way out of context to say, social media has contributed immeasurably to the advancement of knowledge, exposure to valuable information and keep people at their toes in chasing their individual goals in a better way. Nevertheless, well-packaged irrelevances also flood the social media posing to influence people’s social life but invariably devoiding them of moral standards, values, characters and the real essence of knowledge is becoming questionable
The choice of word used in most of the informative social media contents now serves a political purpose to either create tension, undermine the effectiveness of an act or to create a total distraction. To a large extent, the media controls the actions and inactions of people but “who” and “what” controls the media? Is it the truth or the quest to gain a large audience? Is it the government or the influential? Is it the facts, value and human rights or the ecstasy of dominance?
